Construction Updates

August 24, 2010

Construction on the Fitchburg Library continues to progress with footing and foundation walls being poured in place every day. All east and north perimeter footings are complete. The column pads on the west end are being poured. The east foundation wall is basically complete and they have started working on the north foundation wall. Over the next 2 weeks the foundation walls will be nearing completion and Masonry will begin in the parking level. The precast which will make up the 1st floor will begin the end of September.

After years of hard work and preparation by countless city employees and volunteers, the Fitchburg Public Library is under construction. The site fence is up and Research Park Drive has been closed. We started clearing topsoil on the library site last week to prepare for the mass excavation over the next 2 weeks. You will notice work on the West side of Research Park Drive, some of this is temporary work to create space for construction trailers and staging area for construction materials. This space will be returned to its original condition at the end of construction. We have installed temporary storm sewer around the site. Next week they will continue excavation and the first footings will be poured.

Through the rest of July and August most of the construction will be below grade, but by the end of September the precast over the underground parking will be underway. The building will take shape in October when the structural steel is erected. In the month of November you will get a glimpse of the exterior brick and stone and by the end of the year, the exterior finishes including windows will be nearing completion.
